Hotel des Mille Collines

Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills, or mille collines.

The Hôtel des Mille Collines is a large hotel in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda. The four star hotel has 112 rooms, a bar/café, three conference rooms, a restaurant, and a swimming pool. The story of the hotel and its manager, Paul Rusesabagina, during the 1994 War, was used as the basis of the movie Hotel Rwanda. The hotel appeared as itself in the 2005 HBO film Sometimes in April.

The Belgian airline Sabena owned the hotel at the time of the war. On September 15th, 2005, the Hôtel des Mille Collines was handed over from Sabena Hotels Belgium to Mikcor Hotels Holding Rwanda. Miko Rwayitare, the Managing Director of the MIKCOR group, said during the handover that the group now owns 89% of the Hotel with 8.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent owned by Rwanda Development Bank (BRD) and the government of Rwanda, respectively. Rwayitare is also the Executive Chairman of Telecel International, a communications company.
